I just got input from Muriel regarding the identity of the people in the Libby family photo (c 1924). She says that the couple just to the left and right of Grandma Libby in the picture are Uncle Bus (Donald) and his "first love" Gert. The couple at the right end are Horace and Ruth.
Gert was Bus's first love and fourth wife (she died in 1977 and is buried next to Bus at Oak Hill). Muriel writes "she was always special to the rest of the family and would be at many of our family gatherings after Uncle Bus went on the road with the quartet singing at night clubs and on the radio.
"Lucette didn't come into the family until Bus and she were both in a stage musical, some years later. Bus and Lucette came to Minneapolis for Christmas in 1932 and 1936. I [Muriel] had been going to school that fall [1936] at the Minneapolis Art School. When they returned to the west coast they wanted to take me with them. My mother always thought that Lucette must have wanted me to meet her son. We had been in the California Bay area for only a few days when we got word that Grandpa was in the hospital with pneumonia. I had heard Grandma saying that if Grandpa ever got pneumonia that would be the end of him because he was so overweight. In those days doctors said that pneumonia was the 'old folk's friend' because it took their life. Now it can be cured. So we started out for Minneapolis driving straight through hoping to get there for the funeral. Their car was just a coupe with a shelf and I would sometimes crawl up on the shelf to sleep. They tried to postpone the funeral as long as they could and we finally arrived just the night before."
Muriel agrees that Grandma Lohman looks pregnant (with Richard, who was born April 3, 1924).
